Fashion Business: How To Identify Your Customers

As a fashion entrepreneur or an aspiring one, it is essential that you know who your customers are. Identifying your customers and what their needs are, will set your business in the right part. When a customer's needs are met, it will more often than not, lead to increase in sales. Now how do you identify who they are? We'll look at these two parameters as determinants: Demographic and Psychographic Segmentation.

Demographics focus on physical factors such as age, gender, income. Psychographics on the other hand focus on intrinsic factors such as, personality and lifestyle.

Let us take a look at these different factors individually.

DEMOGRAPHICS
Age: What age group do you want to cater to? You need to set an age range and ensure that this range is not so wide. After establishing the age group, you are able to sell/create designs that will be appealing to this category of people. You might have great designs, but if you are marketing to the wrong age group, you most likely will not make sales.

Gender: Who are you selling to? Are you selling to the men, women or both? This is important if your designs are gender specific, as it helps you target your market easily. As a matter of fact, I think this is the easiest segmentation. It is worthy of note that gender specific products can still be marketed to the opposite gender as gift ideas *wink* For instance, you sell fashionable designer handbags for women. It is only natural to target women. However, there are men who are also your potential customers, because these items can be purchased as gifts for their significant other.

Income: What income level are you looking at? As we know, affordability is relative. What Person A can afford might be too expensive for Person B.

Occupation: As a fashion entrepreneur, it is important to understand that while your customers want to look fashionable, they will most likely be looking out for functionality as well. So you're considering what their occupation is and what will be useful to them.

PSYCHOGRAPHICS
Personality: Are they outgoing, introverted, compulsive?

Style: What is their fashion sense like? Do they like to follow trend or they just want comfort?

There are other factors like how often they shop, how they like to shop, where they like to shop, do they prefer quality or quantity?

Once all these have been identified, your are then able to create a persona. This makes it easier to develop the right marketing campaign which will in turn generate sales.

Let's Talk Fashion & Styling

Fashion, we can say, is as old as the human race and we can see how it has evolved from the early years, to the middle ages up till the 21st century. In the past, women wore really long modest dresses, as the middle ages approached, they switched it up a bit and were adorned with more elaborate outfits, like layered skirts, corsets, etc. Different factors over the years have bee responsible for this evolution, such as age, values, environment, societal changes, amongst others. Photo credit: vue.ai A lot of us see fashion in different ways, some see it as following trend, for others, it is the art of styling, but one thing remains sure and that is, fashion is a form of self expression. The famous designer Gianni Versace once said, "Don't be into trends. Don't make fashion own you but decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live". One good thing about fashion is its versatility. You can create your own style and stick with it. ...
